San Lorenzo Collegiate Church, church building in Montevarchi, Italy
San Lorenzo Collegiate Church is a collegiate church in Montevarchi with a slender bell tower topped by a statue of Saint Lawrence. Its interior features numerous Baroque elements and houses a museum displaying medieval and Renaissance artworks from the region.
Construction began in 1327 with the main altar completed by 1360. Major renovations followed in the early 1700s under architect Massimiliano Soldani Benzi, reshaping much of its appearance.
The church displays religious artworks spanning multiple periods, including pieces by Andrea della Robbia and a stone portrait of Pope Leo X. Visitors can observe how the region's artistic evolution is documented through these sacred objects on view here.
The church is open during regular visiting hours and welcomes visitors to explore both the interior and the museum collection. Access is straightforward for visitors of different mobility needs and the site is easy to navigate on foot.
The church preserves a relic called the Sacro Latte, reportedly donated in 1266 by Count Guido Guerra VI after receiving it from Charles I of Naples. This gift connects the small town to major European rulers of the medieval period.
