Palazzo del Podestà

Palazzo del Podestà stands on Piazza Varchi and features a three-level structure combining stone and brick construction from different architectural periods. The ground floor holds a courtyard, while the first floor houses a large hall designed for city council gatherings.

The building was constructed in the 14th century as an administrative headquarters and underwent significant remodeling in the 19th century. Those changes followed the region's integration into the unified Italian state and adapted the structure to new governance needs.

Inside, ceramic medallions and painted wall sections showcase works by local artists from the 20th century, enriching this seat of civic authority with contemporary creativity. These decorations reflect how the building served as a gathering place for artistic expression.

The plaza in front of the building is easily accessible and offers a good overview of the facade and its details. The interior can be visited at certain times, so it is advisable to check opening hours in advance.

Coat of arms displays on the walls preserve memories of different administrative periods and show several centuries of local governance history. These painted and carved emblems come from various eras between the 16th and 18th centuries.
