Consonno, Ghost town in Olginate, Italy
Consonno is an abandoned settlement at 634 meters elevation in the province of Lecco, with decaying leisure structures from the 1960s. The site consists of empty buildings featuring exotic elements like pagodas and towers, now overgrown with vegetation among forested slopes.
An entrepreneur purchased the farming hamlet in 1962 and transformed it into a leisure resort with artificial buildings and attractions. A landslide in 1976 severely damaged the access road, and the complex closed permanently a few years later.
The ruins still bear inscriptions and decorative touches from replicas of classical architecture that once symbolized modern prosperity. Visitors often notice the surreal mix of decaying pagodas, minarets and neo-Gothic towers standing like stage sets in the Lombard countryside.
Access is via a narrow mountain road, and visitors should wear sturdy footwear as the terrain is uneven and sometimes slippery. There are no restrooms or food options on site, so bringing water and snacks is advisable.
The original village church of San Maurizio still stands among the leisure buildings and serves as a contrast to the artificial surroundings. The small cemetery grounds beside the church are among the few places that remain from the original hamlet.
