Cristo del Mare, Religious marble statue in Santa Caterina, Italy.
Cristo del Mare is a marble statue of Jesus located on Mount St. Biagio that rises approximately 21 meters tall. Its arms extend roughly 19 meters from fingertip to fingertip, spreading wide across the mountain landscape.
The statue was built in 1965 by artist Bruno Innocenti after Count Stefano Rivetti was inspired by his visit to Rio de Janeiro. The monument emerged as an Italian counterpart to the famous Christ statue in South America.
The statue portrays Jesus with shorter hair and beard than typical religious depictions, and its outstretched arms seem to embrace the surrounding mountains. Visitors notice this distinctive look immediately when approaching the monument.
The site is best visited during clear weather when views of the surrounding mountains and sea are unobstructed. Sturdy shoes are recommended since the path to the top can be steep and the ground uneven.
Among European Jesus statues, this monument ranks among the three tallest by height, with a head that alone measures 3 meters across. These proportions make the statue impressive and recognizable from great distances.
