The construction of this religious building dates back to the 13th century, replacing an earlier church dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari.
The wooden ceiling displays carved brackets with Arabic motifs interpreted in Gothic style, reflecting the diverse architectural influences in Sicily.
The cathedral opens daily from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, with regular mass services and extended hours during the summer months of August.
The structure earned the nickname 'fortress cathedral' due to its medieval defensive elements, including battlements and a tower with bells from 1750.
