The Eremo di Sant'Anna is a hermitage perched on a hillside along eastern Sicily's coastline. The complex includes a small chapel, multiple monk cells, a large water cistern, and a garden surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation.
A Franciscan friar named Fra Rosario Campione founded this hermitage in 1751 as a place for prayer and solitude. A few years later, in 1756, the Grasso brothers expanded the site with additional structures that strengthened its presence.
The name honors Saint Anna, venerated as the mother of Mary in Christian tradition. Visitors can see original ceramic tiles and religious paintings that reveal how monks lived their spiritual lives in this isolated setting.
The hilltop location offers both spiritual contemplation and panoramic views of the Ionian coastline in eastern Sicily. Wear sturdy shoes for your visit, as the pathways are uneven and the terrain is hilly.
The main altar was crafted entirely from copper with colored marble inlays by two skilled friars, Fra Vincenzo Musumeci and Fra Raffaele Badalà. This remarkable piece reveals the craftsmanship and artistic devotion of the hermitage's early inhabitants.
