Fontana dell'aquila

The Fontana dell'Aquila is a stone fountain standing in Piazza Duomo with an eagle sculpture at the top positioned above a fluted column. Below the eagle is a lion head that serves as a water spout, releasing water into the basin beneath.

Engineer Pietro Leonardi designed this fountain and Stefano Varner completed it on March 20, 1850, incorporating parts from an earlier structure. This reconstruction was part of a larger effort to renovate Trento's central square during the 1800s.

The eagle on this fountain is the symbol of Trento, and you can see how the city expresses itself through the objects it places in public spaces.

This fountain sits in the middle of Piazza Duomo in central Trento and is straightforward to locate. The area is flat and easy to walk around, with plenty of cafes and shops nearby.

Local legend tells of a condemned man who proclaimed his innocence, and a real eagle supposedly turned to stone, becoming the statue you see today. This tale adds a legendary layer to what is otherwise a well-crafted public monument.
