Trento, Capital city in Trentino-Alto Adige region, Italy.
Trento is a city in Trentino in northern Italy, sitting along the Adige River between three mountains. The historic center consists of narrow lanes and arcaded squares, while Castello del Buonconsiglio rises on a hill above the town.
The place was a Roman settlement on the trade route between the Po plain and the Alps. Between 1545 and 1563, the Council of Trent met here, reshaping the Catholic Church after the Reformation.
The name comes from the Roman term Tridentum, referring to the three hills that shape the cityscape. Visitors can walk through Renaissance arcades along Via Belenzani today, where frescoes on the façades show biblical and mythological scenes.
The old town is easy to explore on foot, as most landmarks are close together. Those wanting to visit the surrounding mountains should come in summer, when hiking trails are open.
In Piazza Duomo stands an octagonal fountain from the 18th century showing Neptune with his trident. This depiction links the ancient name of the city with the symbol of the sea god.
