Eagle tower, Medieval tower in Castello del Buonconsiglio, Trento, Italy.
The Eagle Tower is a medieval structure within Castello del Buonconsiglio in Trento that holds a series of frescoes on its second level depicting the twelve months of the year. These paintings feature carefully rendered scenes with building details and numerous human figures going about their activities.
The tower underwent major renovation at the end of the 14th century under Prince-Bishop George of Liechtenstein, who raised its height significantly. These modifications changed how it looked from the city side and established it as a major building within the castle complex.
The frescoes inside depict how people actually lived during medieval times, showing nobles and peasants doing their daily tasks, eating, and celebrating across the seasons. Looking at these paintings, you can see how differently the wealthy and working classes spent their time.
You can reach the tower by walking along a pathway on the eastern side of the castle walls, but expect steep stairs inside. Guided tours are available and help you understand the details of the frescoes better.
One of the January frescoes shows Stenico Castle during winter with nobles playing snowball fights in the snow. This detail offers a rare look at how the wealthy actually spent their leisure time in medieval times.
