Museo provinciale del Castello del Buonconsiglio

The museum occupies a fortress perched on a hilltop above Trento, displaying collections spanning from prehistoric times to the 1800s. Exhibitions are spread across several buildings, including an ancient keep decorated with painted frescoes.

The castle emerged in the 13th century and served for centuries as the residence of prince-bishops who governed the region. After their rule ended, the building was converted into a warehouse and eventually transformed into a museum.

Inside are handwritten manuscripts from various centuries, including religious texts with elaborate decorations. Visitors can see these rare works, which show how scholars and monks worked in the medieval period.

The castle sits on a hillside with good views across the city and is reachable on foot. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as there are many stairs and uneven paths to navigate.

One room contains medieval wall paintings showing the activities people performed throughout each season of the year. These images offer a window into daily life from hundreds of years ago.
