Fondazione Museo storico del Trentino, History and technology museum in Trento, Italy
The Fondazione Museo storico del Trentino occupies the former Marangonerie building beside the Castello del Buonconsiglio, with offices and a cinema-history archive in Via Torre Verde. Its displays trace Trentino from the Napoleonic era to the 21st century, and its holdings include the banner of the Trentino Legion and the flag of the Trentino Students' Society.
The museum was founded in 1923 and has since housed records of major regional events. The collections include personal accounts from soldiers spanning the period from the Napoleonic wars through World War II.
The museum's name changed in 1995 to "Museo storico in Trento" to signal broader thematic and territorial scope, and its statute assigns the presidency to the city's mayor. It belongs to the national network of institutes for the history of the Resistance, a membership held since 1945. Its collections grew from private donations and bequests, including the banner of the Trentino Legion and the flag of the Trentino Students' Society.
The museum's main exhibition rooms are in via Torre d'Augusto, outside the Buonconsiglio Castle, where it moved in January 2003; offices, administration and the cinema and history archive occupy additional spaces in via Torre Verde since 2009. The library holds 19th- and 20th-century monographs, pamphlets and periodicals, and the paper, photographic and iconographic archive keeps about a hundred documents, the oldest from the 18th century.
The museum's name changed in 1995 to "Museo storico in Trento" to mark a widening of its themes and territory; its statute gives the presidency to the mayor of Trento. Since 2003 its activities have been based in via Torre d'Augusto, outside the castle.
