Tridentine Diocesan Museum, Religious art museum in Piazza Duomo, Trento, Italy.
The Tridentine Diocesan Museum is an art museum for religious works in the old city of Trento and is located in the former Palazzo Pretorio. The rooms hold paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, and objects from several centuries.
The museum was founded in 1903 and was formerly the residence of the prince-bishops of Trento. Beneath the building lie remains of an early Christian basilica dating from the first centuries after Christ.
The collection shows religious artworks that reflect different regions of Europe, including paintings by local and Italian artists. Visitors see altarpieces, reliquaries, and textiles that reveal how religious art was valued in this region.
The museum is located on Cathedral Square, the main plaza of the old city, and is easily reached on foot. Plan for about two hours to visit, and note that some stairs and narrow rooms can make navigation challenging.
Below the museum, visitors can see the remains of the Roman Porta Veronensis, an ancient gate built nearly 2000 years ago. These archaeological finds show the long history of the site before its time as a bishop's residence.
