Vellone–Campo dei Fiori funicular, Funicular railway in Varese, Italy.
The Vellone-Campo dei Fiori funicular connects the Vellone river valley with the Campo dei Fiori area, climbing roughly 170 meters (560 feet) over a track of about 370 meters (1,200 feet). Two cabins operating on a counterbalance system could carry 55 passengers each, completing the route in around three minutes.
The funicular opened in May 1909 and operated continuously until 1953, when both it and the Vellone-Sacro Monte line that shared its lower station finally closed.
The funicular made reaching the Grand Hotel Campo dei Fiori easier, helping establish the area as a popular destination where visitors could enjoy elevated views and mountain hospitality.
The route's steep incline means you need a firm foothold during the ride, so wearing stable shoes is advisable. Plan for a brief but intense uphill journey that rewards you with views from higher elevation.
The funicular operated one of Italy's steepest routes with a grade of about 56.5 percent, making it a rare example of engineering innovation during an era when such extreme inclines were uncommon.
