Laghi Alimini

Laghi Alimini is a lake system near Otranto in Apulia consisting of two connected bodies of water with different characteristics. The larger lake opens to the Adriatic Sea, while the smaller one receives only freshwater from natural sources.

The lake system took its present form following stabilization works carried out in the decades after World War II. These efforts created the conditions for the ecosystem to flourish as it exists today.

The name comes from the Greek word 'Limne', showing ancient language influences in this part of Italy. As you walk around, you notice how locals and visitors use the shoreside paths to enjoy the quiet of the water.

Both lakes are accessible via well-maintained paths that are good for walking and exploring. It's helpful to bring water and wear comfortable shoes, especially if you plan to spend extended time in the sun.

The area serves as a stopover point for flamingos and other migratory birds traveling between Africa and Europe. Rare swamp orchids and other specialized plants thrive here, making them a special sight when they bloom.
