Torre Pinta hypogeum, Underground tomb and archaeological site in Otranto, Italy

The Torre Pinta hypogeum is an underground tomb and archaeological site located in Otranto, a coastal town in southern Italy. It consists of a long corridor carved into the rock, leading to a circular chamber, giving the whole structure a cross-shaped layout.

The hypogeum was discovered in 1976 and is believed to date from early Christian times, though its exact purpose has never been confirmed. Over the centuries, the space was repurposed and eventually used as a dovecote.

The hypogeum sits away from the usual tourist paths and can only be accessed by collecting a key from a nearby guesthouse. This quiet, almost private arrangement gives the visit a personal quality that is rare at better-known sites.

The site is enclosed by a gate, and visitors must collect a key from a nearby guesthouse before they can enter. The walk to the site passes through countryside, so comfortable shoes are a good idea.

Although the site is linked to early burial or religious use, it was at some point converted into a dovecote, which makes it one of the more unusual examples of a repurposed tomb. No one knows exactly why the structure was built, which leaves the visit open to imagination.
