Lago del Salto, Artificial lake in Rieti Province, Italy
Lago del Salto is an artificial reservoir in Rieti Province situated within the Apennine Mountains at 535 meters elevation. Steep forested shores and numerous small inlets define its landscape across approximately 10 square kilometers.
The Salto Dam was completed in 1940, creating this reservoir and submerging several villages in the process. Residents of those settlements relocated to higher ground to make way for the new waterway.
The lake hosts local celebrations that blend regional music and seasonal cuisine, reflecting how water shapes community identity. These gatherings remain central to the rhythm of village life around the shores.
The lake is accessible for fishing and exploring hiking trails along its steep slopes in the surrounding region. Spring through autumn offers the most favorable conditions for visiting and enjoying outdoor activities.
The lake reaches depths near 90 meters and holds pike, carp, and perch among other fish species. These populations draw regular fishing enthusiasts who know the water well.
