Riserva naturale Monte Navegna e Monte Cervia, Regional nature reserve in Province of Rieti, Italy.
Riserva naturale Monte Navegna e Monte Cervia is a protected area covering mountain forests, meadows, and ancient chestnut groves distributed across nine municipalities between two reservoirs. The area forms a mosaic of different habitats spanning from high elevations down to valley floors.
The reserve was established in 1988 and includes multiple archaeological sites and an ancient Roman bridge that served as a post station for livestock movements. These structures show the long history of human use in this mountain territory.
The reserve maintains traditional farming methods, particularly the cultivation of Cicolano Red Chestnut, which holds Protected Geographical Indication status. This chestnut variety has deep roots in the region and shapes the local landscape.
Visits are possible year-round, though spring and autumn offer the most favorable weather and visibility of the landscape. Marked trails and information centers inside the reserve help with orientation.
The territory contains three distinct geological zones with calcareous-marly deposits in the mountains, sandstone formations in the hills, and mixed soils in the valleys. This geological diversity creates different habitats for specialized animal and plant species.
