Castello di Pereto

Castello di Pereto is a medieval fortress located in this small Abruzzo village. The structure features stone walls with a square keep and multiple defensive towers characteristic of Italian military architecture from that era.

The castle was founded in the 10th century by Berardo of Marsi and remained in the hands of various noble families for centuries. A devastating earthquake in 1915 left the structure in ruins until restoration efforts began decades later.

The castle represents a central element of local heritage, with its architecture reflecting various periods of medieval Italian military and residential construction methods.

The castle is best explored on foot and is accessible with moderate slopes. Take time to walk around and view the walls and towers from different angles both inside and outside.

An architect named Aldo Maria Arena took on the challenge of restoring these ruins starting in the 1980s through careful work. His dedication brought international recognition and prevented the structure from disappearing completely.
