Riserva naturale speciale delle Grotte di Pietrasecca

The Pietrasecca Cave Reserve is a protected natural area near Carsoli containing two major caves open to visitors. The two caves differ significantly in their size and passage systems, making each one a distinct exploration experience.

The caves show evidence of use dating back to ancient times, with excavations revealing signs of human activity across different periods. Early inhabitants of the region clearly made use of these spaces for shelter and other purposes.

The University of L'Aquila and Italian Speleological Society collaborate with Carsoli Municipality to maintain and study these geological formations.

Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and bring appropriate clothing, as cave conditions are cool and damp throughout the year. Access difficulty varies by cave, so it helps to learn about the specific requirements beforehand.

The Cervo Cave stretches for 2500 meters with a 70-meter elevation difference, while Ovito Cave features 1370 meters of corridors.
