Lago del Segrino, Alpine lake near Como, Italy
Lago del Segrino is a small pre-alpine lake in the Province of Como, in the Lombardy region of northern Italy. It sits at around 374 meters above sea level and is enclosed by wooded hills that come right down to the water's edge.
The lake appears in medieval records linked to Queen Teodolinda, who is said to have passed through the area during her travels across northern Italy. Over the following centuries, the surrounding land remained largely rural, which helped keep the water and its shores in a natural state.
The name of the lake is said to come from Queen Teodolinda, who discovered it during a journey through the area. A local legend about Saint George and a dragon is also tied to this place, giving it a presence in the folklore of the surrounding villages.
A path circles the entire shoreline and is open to walkers and cyclists alike. Since motorized vehicles are not allowed, the route is safe and easy to follow even with children.
Motorized boats are not allowed on the water, which means the lake is shared between swimmers and birds such as black coots and grey herons that can be spotted from the path. This makes it one of the few spots in the Province of Como where wildlife and visitors move along the same shoreline without disturbance.
