Moschea di Segrate, Islamic center in Segrate, Italy
The Mosque of Segrate is an Islamic place of worship located in a residential neighborhood of Segrate, a town just east of Milan. The building has a dome and a minaret, making it one of the very few mosques in Italy to have both of these architectural features.
The mosque was inaugurated in 1988 and was the first Islamic place of worship in Italy since medieval times to be built with both a dome and a minaret. Its opening came at a time when the Muslim community in northern Italy was growing rapidly.
The mosque is one of the few Islamic places of worship in Lombardy built with a minaret and a dome. Inside, the prayer hall is oriented toward Mecca, and the mihrab, the niche marking that direction, is the visual center of the space.
The mosque is in a quiet residential area and is best reached by car or public transport from Milan. Those wishing to visit outside of prayer times should check in advance, as access may be limited on certain days.
Above the mihrab in the prayer hall, there is an Arabic inscription carved with a passage from the Quran. This type of calligraphic detail is not common in Italian mosques and makes this space a rare example of Islamic decorative art in the region.
