Monte Cengio, Summit in Vicentine Alps, Italy
Monte Cengio rises to 1,354 meters (4,442 feet) on the southwestern edge of the Asiago plateau in the Vicentine Alps in Veneto. The mountain features steep slopes, several marked hiking routes, and sweeping views from the summit across the surrounding peaks.
The mountain saw intense fighting in 1916 during World War I, with thousands of soldiers dying over a short period. These battles shaped the place and eventually led to its recognition as a memorial site.
The mountain was designated as sacred territory in 1967, preserving wartime tunnels and military roads that visitors can walk through today. These underground spaces reflect how soldiers adapted to life on this high terrain during conflict.
Multiple marked trails cross the mountain, including the Strada dei Granatieri, leading to viewpoints and wartime remains. Good footwear and water are important since the paths are hilly with little shelter from sun.
Near the summit, a rocky outcrop called the Salto del Granatiere marks where soldiers chose to jump rather than surrender to approaching enemy forces. This spot remains visible today as a sobering reminder of the combat conditions.
