Monte Cimino

Monte Cimino is a mountain peak reaching 1053 meters and the highest point of the Cimini Mountains in northern Lazio. The slopes are covered with dense beech forest that extends almost to the summit.

During the Late Bronze Age a fortified settlement with defensive structures occupied the summit. This ancient settlement shows that the location held strategic importance in prehistoric times.

The forest surrounding this peak held sacred meaning for ancient peoples who built temples here to honor Jupiter. Visitors walking through the dense trees today can sense why this place was considered holy ground.

Three marked hiking trails maintained by local volunteers provide clear routes to the summit and through the forest. The ascent is straightforward and manageable for visitors with basic fitness levels.

At the forest edge sits a 250-ton trachyte boulder that can be moved with a simple lever system. This trembling stone demonstrates a remarkable physical property of rock formations in this region.
