Monte Rosso, Mountain summit in Piedmont and Aosta Valley, Italy
Monte Rosso is a mountain summit rising to 2,374 meters above sea level at the intersection of three mountain ridges between Valle Cervo and Valle del Lys. The peak features steep rocky formations and an alpine setting defined by lakes and valleys.
The slopes of this summit became part of the Special Nature Reserve of Sacro Monte di Oropa in 2005, which strengthened protection of the local ecosystems. This designation reflected the ecological importance of the area to the region.
The mountain gets its name from the patois word Rous, which refers to the characteristic reddish-brown color of its rocky surface. This natural hue is visible from a distance and makes the summit distinctive in the landscape.
The summit can be reached from the Oropa Sport cable car station via path D23, which passes by Lago del Rosso before climbing the southwestern face. The route follows established trails suitable for those with mountain experience.
Since 1948, the Periplo del Rosso ski mountaineering competition takes place here, using classical technique to traverse the surrounding terrain. This long-running event makes the summit a known destination for professionals in the sport.
