Monte Kronio

Monte Kronio is a limestone mountain with underground caves fed by warm natural vapors rising from sulfur deposits beneath the surface. The site holds both archaeological remains and a sanctuary building with a chapel and art collections inside.

Early cultures left behind pottery from around 3000 BC that hints at wine production practices in the region. The sanctuary developed later in medieval times as a religious center, drawing people to the therapeutic vapors of the caves.

The Sanctuary of San Calogero shapes religious life here, bringing pilgrims and visitors together to experience the chapel and contemplate the surroundings. The site displays Renaissance artwork and reveals the deep connection between this mountain and the local community.

The mountain is accessible by way of a marked hiking trail that leads to the summit and the cave system. Wear sturdy shoes and come prepared for the warm conditions you will find in the underground chambers.

The cave has maintained its heat source for centuries and is sought by local visitors for its perceived health benefits. Many pilgrims come specifically for the warm steam baths that form naturally, with no artificial heating involved.
