Monte Sant'Elia

Monte Sant'Elia is a protected summit near Massafra that rises around 450 meters and offers wide views across the plains to the Gulf of Taranto. Dense forest covers much of the mountain, creating trails that wind through natural landscape.

Shepherds established settlements on the mountain and built stone structures and animal enclosures using dry-stone methods during the 17th century. These buildings stand as records of how people adapted to the landscape for pastoral work.

The summit reflects centuries of pastoral life through its stone-built animal shelters and dwelling ruins that dot the landscape. These structures show how herders once organized their daily routines across the mountain's slopes.
