Ospedale Niguarda Ca' Granda, Major hospital and national heritage site in Milan, Italy
Ospedale Niguarda Ca' Granda is a large hospital and protected national heritage building in northern Milan. The complex consists of several multistory pavilions connected by wide walkways and planted areas.
The hospital opened in October 1939 and brought a modern medical facility to what was then still a rural area on the city edge. The complex was built as part of fascist urban planning and aimed to put Milan's healthcare on new foundations.
The name Ca' Granda comes from Milan's old central hospital and was transferred here when the new complex opened. Visitors today see a large-scale arrangement of pavilions separated by courtyards and gardens that bring light and air to patients.
The site is large and spread across several areas, so it helps to check the layout before visiting. Main entrances are located on Piazza Ospedale Maggiore and are well served by public transport.
The complex maintains its own gardens and small parks between buildings, used by patients and staff as recovery areas. These green zones were part of the original design and were meant to support healing through contact with nature.
