Museo Della Bonifica, History museum in San Donà di Piave, Italy
The Museo della Bonifica is a history and ethnographic museum in San Donà di Piave, housed in a former Clarisse convent. It displays tools, maps, photographs, and everyday objects that document how people managed water and land around the Piave river over the centuries.
The museum was founded in 1975 as the Museo delle genti del Veneto e del Basso Piave, devoted to the rural world of the lower Piave. Long collaboration with the Consorzio di Bonifica Basso Piave from the 1970s brought in so much material on land reclamation that the city changed its focus and name to Museo della Bonifica. It opened to the public in 1983 in a former Clarisse convent bought by the municipality in 1982; a new wing opened in 1998.
The museum is on Viale Primavera in San Donà di Piave and is easy to reach on foot from the town center. Opening hours vary between summer and the rest of the year, so checking before your visit is a good idea.
The museum's library holds about 11,000 volumes on agriculture, land reclamation and the Great War, including a 1642 Bologna edition of the Atlante geografico d'Italia, one of the first Italian atlases. Among the Second World War items is a Xª Flottiglia MAS officer's uniform worn by paratrooper lieutenant Ubaldo Stefani of San Donà, though he never served in that unit.
