PalaSharp, Multi-purpose sports arena in Lampugnano district, Milan, Italy
PalaSharp was a tent structure built in a few months in 1986 in Milan's Lampugnano district, with a maximum capacity of 10,045 spectators. Inside, tiered seating rose from a wooden basketball court, and a curved ceiling of overlapping rectangular acoustic panels covered the arena. A heavy steel lighting truss hung above the court, and sponsor banners lined the lower walls.
The hall opened in 1986 with a concert and later operated under different names such as PalaTrussardi and PalaVobis throughout its history. It closed in 2011 after operating for about 25 years.
The arena's name changed with each sponsor: PalaTrussardi from 1986, PalaVobis from 1996, then PalaTucker, Mazda Palace and PalaSharp from 2007. Its wrestling nights during the WWF tours of the 1980s and 1990s are still remembered, and in 2002 it hosted the Giornata della Legalità, which drew over 40,000 people.
The hall was located at Via Antonio Sant'Elia 33 in Milan's western area and was accessible by public transportation. Visitors should check in advance what type of event was happening, as the program varied greatly.
The arena was built in a few months in 1986 by the Togni circus family, after the San Siro sports hall collapsed under an exceptional snowfall. Its proximity to a convent caused repeated complaints from the nuns over loud, late-running shows.
