Oasi Valle Brusà, Nature reserve in Cerea, Italy
The Oasi Valle Brusà is a protected wetland reserve made up of marshlands, shallow waters, and muddy areas near Cerea. The site features two main zones with different habitats that provide refuge for numerous bird species, amphibians, and aquatic plants adapted to wet conditions.
The area was once part of a much larger wetland system that covered the region until human activity reduced and fragmented it. Today the reserve protects what remains of these marshlands and maintains their ecological role in the landscape.
The reserve contains an artificial elevation called Motta della Tombola, reaching 21 meters above sea level, which earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2011.
Wear weather-resistant clothing and sturdy footwear since paths can be muddy and wet conditions are constant throughout the area. Early morning or late afternoon visits offer the best chances to spot wildlife in their natural activity.
The site shelters rare amphibians including Italian agile frogs and great crested newts that have become uncommon in much of western Europe. Protecting these species makes this reserve an important refuge for populations that face threats elsewhere.
