Porta Spagnola, City gate in Augusta, Italy

The marble structure features a monumental entrance crowned with a coat of arms supported by a lion and griffin sculptures in Baroque style.

Built between 1681 and 1682, architect Carlos de Grunenbergh designed this fortification entrance for the Spanish administration in Sicily under King Charles II.

The Latin inscription beneath the coat of arms declares the gate's purpose in protecting Sicily and all of Christendom during Spanish rule.

Located on the isthmus connecting Augusta to mainland Sicily, the gate functions as the main entrance to the historic center of the city.

The construction required a substantial investment of 30,000 scudi, authorized by the city council on May 13, 1680.
