Saline di Priolo, Regional nature reserve in Priolo Gargallo, Italy.
Saline di Priolo is a protected nature reserve on the Sicilian coast near Syracuse covering around 55 hectares. It contains salt flats, wetlands, Mediterranean scrub, and dune areas that together create different habitats for wildlife.
The area became protected in 2000, transforming former salt production lands into a nature reserve. This conversion created an important refuge for resident and migratory bird species.
The name comes from the salt production that once shaped this landscape. Visitors can observe how the salty waters support a distinctive community of plants and animals adapted to these particular conditions.
The reserve has observation shelters and well-maintained trails that make visiting comfortable in any season. Spring and autumn are especially favorable times for spotting the diverse bird life here.
The site hosts a natural history library and specialized research laboratories studying wetland ecology. Scientists here investigate how salt water ecosystems and climate changes affect coastal wildlife.
