Via dei Sepolcri, Archaeological site in Neapolis Park, Syracuse, Italy.

Via dei Sepolcri is an ancient burial route within Neapolis Archaeological Park featuring rock-cut chambers dating from Greek times. The path winds through multiple burial chambers carved directly into stone, varying in size and design.

The burial site originated during Syracuse's Greek colonial period in the 8th century BCE as a resting place for prominent citizens. The chambers were carved and reused over centuries, reflecting the city's long history of habitation.

The burial chambers display Greek building methods with rectangular niches carved into limestone, showing how ancient Mediterranean people practiced funerals. Walking through, you notice how the size and location of each chamber hints at the deceased person's importance in the community.

The site is accessible year-round, but mornings are best to avoid harsh sun and crowds on the narrow pathways. Wear sturdy shoes since the stone paths are uneven and some sections have steep steps.

Some burial chambers contain ancient Greek inscriptions preserving the names and social rank of the deceased. These rare markings give archaeologists insight into the social organization of the city at that time.
