Madonna delle Lacrime Sanctuary, Catholic pilgrimage church in Syracuse, Italy
The Madonna delle Lacrime Sanctuary is a modern basilica in Syracuse featuring a distinctive cone-shaped structure rising 103 meters, constructed with reinforced concrete ribs. The interior houses a central altar displaying a revered image of the Madonna and can accommodate thousands of visitors across different levels.
Construction began in 1966 after French architects won an international competition to design this modern sanctuary. The basilica took shape over the following years and gradually became an important pilgrimage destination in Sicily.
The sanctuary serves as a spiritual gathering place where locals and pilgrims meet to participate in worship and prayer throughout the year. Visitors can experience how the space brings together people from different backgrounds who share devotion to the Madonna.
The site is accessible on foot and offers plenty of space for visitors to explore, with areas on different levels throughout the structure. Wearing comfortable shoes is recommended, as the building spans multiple levels and allows for a full tour of the interior.
During foundation work, crews uncovered remains dating back to the 6th century BC, including ancient houses and road sections from the old Akradina neighborhood. These archaeological discoveries reveal that the basilica stands on land with thousands of years of human history beneath it.
