Porta Ligny, Historical entrance gate in Ortigia, Syracuse, Italy

This former military gate featured a 4-meter-wide passage and occupied a surface area of 240 square meters at the entrance to Ortigia island.

Built in 1673 under the orders of Claude Lamoral, Prince of Ligne, during Spanish rule, the gate underwent repairs and expansion after the 1693 earthquake.

The marble royal coat of arms of Charles II of Spain that adorned the top of the gate remains preserved in the Bellomo Museum.

The location of the former gate can be found near the current Umbertino Bridge, between the Post Office shore and the Ortigia side dock.

The gate remained operational for 220 years until its demolition in 1893 as part of the urban development plan by engineer Pandolfo.
