Temple of Artemis in Syracuse
Temple of Artemis in Syracuse, Ancient Greek temple in Ortygia, Italy
The Temple of Artemis features six columns along its shorter sides and fourteen columns along its longer sides, following classical Doric architecture principles.
The temple construction began in the sixth century BCE but remained incomplete, with its materials later repurposed for a new Doric temple dedicated to Athena.
The temple served as a religious center where sailors conducted ceremonies and offered sacrifices before maritime departures when the gilded shield disappeared from view.
Visitors can examine fragments of the temple structure within the Regional Archaeological Museum Paolo Orsi, which houses marble tiles and lion head decorations.
Archaeological investigations in 1910 by Paolo Orsi revealed foundation structures that connect this temple to the architectural traditions of the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus.
