Cathedral of Syracuse, Catholic cathedral in Ortigia district, Syracuse, Italy
The Cathedral of Syracuse is a Catholic place of worship in Ortigia that incorporates ancient Greek temple columns into its structure. The facade displays Baroque styling with Corinthian columns and statues, while the interior preserves the ancient building elements discovered on site.
A bishop built the structure in the 7th century on the foundations of a temple from the 5th century. During its history, the building also served as a mosque before being converted back to a Christian church.
The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Lucy, a saint whose veneration runs deep in Syracuse's religious life. Visitors witness her relics displayed here, and during yearly processions, a silver statue representing her is carried through the city's streets.
The site is open daily for religious services and visits, allowing guests to examine both the Baroque facade and ancient architectural elements. It is wise to check opening times in advance and wear appropriate clothing to respect the religious nature of the place.
The building's outer walls contain original Doric columns from the ancient temple, visible from both inside and outside. These columns directly show how builders integrated the ancient structure into the new church.
