Temple of Athena, Ancient Greek temple in Syracuse, Italy
The Temple of Athena features columns in the Doric architectural order, displaying precise mathematical proportions and structural techniques of ancient Greek construction methods.
Built between 426 and 421 BC on a strategic bastion at the southwestern edge of the Acropolis, replacing previous religious structures at this location.
The temple includes carved reliefs depicting battles between Greeks and Persians, with specific scenes representing the Battle of Marathon from 490 BC.
Visitors can access the archaeological site through guided tours that explain the architectural elements and historical context of the temple complex.
The marble parapets added around 410 BC contain detailed relief carvings showing the goddess Athena in different victory scenes.
