Riserva naturale guidata Gole di San Venanzio is a protected nature reserve with steep rocky cliffs on the eastern side and more gradual terrain on the western slopes. The Aterno River cuts through the landscape, creating deep canyons with soaring walls, while the hermitage occupies a small sanctuary nestled within this dramatic setting.

The reserve was officially designated by regional law in 1998 to protect ancient Neolithic rock art discovered in the canyons. This protection also created a natural corridor linking two major parks and safeguarding a transitional zone between distinct ecosystems.

The hermitage of Saint Venanzius is nestled within the canyon walls and served as a refuge for monks throughout the ages. Today the site holds spiritual meaning for locals and draws visitors seeking to experience the religious character of the place.

The hermitage can be visited only with advance arrangements, preferably as part of a guided group visit. Visitors should wear sturdy hiking boots since trails are uneven and the terrain sometimes requires careful climbing over rocks.

The Aterno River has carved sheer walls reaching up to 300 meters high over millions of years, creating natural ledges and varied habitats as it flowed. This geological work makes the canyon one of the most striking examples of river-carved landscape in the region.
