Santuario di Valmala

The Santuario di Valmala is a shrine situated on a plateau at about 1,378 meters (4,520 feet) elevation in the Varaita Valley within Cuneo province in Piedmont. The site includes two buildings that accommodate pilgrims and a chapel housing a statue of the Virgin Mary.

The site began with a pillar built in 1835, followed by a chapel in 1840 that expanded the place for prayer. Construction of the main sanctuary was completed in 1851 by architect Giacomo Galfre, bringing these elements together into one structure.

The Madonna of Valmala is the spiritual focus that draws visitors to pray and seek blessings at this mountain location. Pilgrims come to connect with the religious tradition tied to the reported apparition that gave this place its meaning.

The site is most accessible during warmer months since the high elevation means weather can change quickly. Guest accommodations are available in two nearby buildings that serve visitors staying for prayer and reflection.

Inside, a fresco depicts the Madonna appearing above the exact stone where four shepherdesses reported seeing her in 1834. This visual record ties the place directly to the legend that sparked its creation.
