Monte Birrone

Monte Birrone is a summit in the Piedmont Alps situated between the Maira and Varaita valleys, reaching about 2,130 meters (6,990 feet) in elevation. The slopes feature metamorphic rock formations that give the mountain its distinctive rocky appearance and exposed ridges.

A historic military road was constructed near the mountain to provide access to strategic defense positions in this Alpine region. This route remains in use today as the primary trail for those climbing to the summit.

The mountain marks a boundary shared by three communities and attracts visitors who follow cross-border hiking paths. Local residents recognize it as a key landmark in the landscape between two valleys.

The climbing route follows marked paths starting from the military road at the water divide and heading upward to the summit. The higher sections are open and exposed, so proper weather protection and sturdy footwear are essential.

The mountain sits at a geological boundary where two distinct rock bodies meet: the Dora-Maira complex and the Pietre verdi di Gastaldi formation. This rare arrangement makes the site of special interest to geologists and reveals an unexpected window into the deep structure of the Alps.
