Rifugio Contrin, Alpine mountain hut in Canazei, Italy
Rifugio Contrin is a mountain hut in the Dolomites, close to the Marmolada group, sitting at around 2,000 meters (6,500 ft) above sea level. It offers overnight stays in private rooms and shared dormitories, as well as meals for hikers and mountaineers.
The hut was built in the 1890s by a German Alpine club and suffered heavy damage during World War I. After the war, local mountaineering groups rebuilt it, and it has been in operation ever since.
The refuge is a gathering point for hikers and mountaineers passing through the Marmolada area, and it hosts an annual national meeting of Alpine troops each summer. The event brings together people from across Italy who share a connection to the mountains.
The refuge is generally open from mid-June to late September, when the surrounding trails are free of snow. Booking a bed in advance is advisable, especially on weekends and during the busiest summer weeks.
Several long-distance trails meet at this hut, including one that crosses six Alpine countries. Staying here for a night means you may share breakfast with trekkers who have walked in from very different corners of the Alps.
