Teatro del Silenzio, Outdoor amphitheater in Lajatico, Italy
Teatro del Silenzio is an open-air amphitheater set within the rolling hills near Lajatico and shaped by the natural contours of the land. A large sculptural head stands at the center of the stage area and remains in place throughout the year.
Tenor Andrea Bocelli founded the theater in 2006 near his birthplace. The municipality of Lajatico built the site with the help of artists and architects who transformed the natural surroundings into a performance space.
Andrea Bocelli returns each year to his hometown and hosts a single concert here, drawing singers and audiences from around the world. The name Theatre of Silence reflects its quiet existence for most of the year, broken by one night of music.
The theater opens for just one day in July each year for a concert that welcomes thousands of visitors. During the rest of the year the site remains accessible but without events or facilities.
Each year the theater is decorated with new art installations that are removed after the concert. Only the central sculpture remains year-round, marking the empty space.
