Villa di Spedaletto, Renaissance villa in Lajatico, Italy.
Villa di Spedaletto is a country residence near Lajatico featuring elements from different historical periods and architectural styles. The structure combines Romanesque, medieval, and Renaissance features within a single building complex.
The building began as a Roman fort and later served as a pilgrim hospice under the Knights of Tau. Lorenzo de' Medici acquired it in 1496 and transformed it into a significant family residence.
The interior features decorations created by leading Renaissance artists including Ghirlandaio, Filippino Lippi, Pietro Perugino, and Botticelli. Their frescoes shape the character of the rooms to this day.
The property remains under private ownership by the Corsini family and is not freely accessible without advance arrangement. Contact the Lajatico Tourist Office for details about visiting opportunities.
A fire destroyed much of the original Renaissance frescoes, leaving only traces of what were once magnificent artworks. This makes visible today how much artistic treasure was lost to that disaster.
