Torre dei Cerchi, Medieval tower in central Florence, Italy
The Torre dei Cerchi stands tall among other structures in Florence, featuring traditional stone masonry construction and vertical architectural elements.
Built in the 12th century during Florence's tower-building period, this structure served as both a defensive fortification and a symbol of family power.
The tower represents the medieval practice of constructing elevated residences for protection during the conflicts between Guelph and Ghibelline factions in Florence.
Visitors can find the tower in the historical center, where it stands as one of the approximately 50 remaining tower houses from medieval Florence.
Each floor of the tower contained a single room, with the kitchen positioned at the top level to reduce fire hazards and food odors.
