Teatrino della Baldracca, Historic theatre in Via dei Castellani, Florence, Italy
Teatrino della Baldracca occupied the first floor of a palace near the Arno River and held approximately 300 spectators in its side boxes. The small playhouse was reached through a hidden door in the courtyard of Palazzo dei Veliti on Via Castellani.
Established in 1576 in a former customs house building, this theatre remained active until the late 17th century. It emerged during a period when indoor theatres were becoming established across Italian cities.
The venue hosted Commedia dell'Arte performances featuring celebrated actors such as Francesco and Isabella Andreini from the Gelosi Company. Audiences watched from latticed boxes where the Grand Duke and nobility could enjoy the sometimes provocative shows while remaining unseen.
The theatre was accessed through a narrow, discrete entrance tucked away in the courtyard of the building. Today the site is not regularly open to the public and is mainly of historical interest for those researching Renaissance theatre.
The venue became known for somewhat risque performances, which explains why the Grand Duke and nobles preferred watching from hidden vantage points. This appetite for bolder entertainment made it a noteworthy gathering place in Florence's theatre world.
