Stadttheater Meran, Art Nouveau theatre in Merano, Italy.
Stadttheater Meran is an Art Nouveau theatre located between Freiheitsstraße and Theaterbrücke in the town centre. Inside, it features red velvet seats arranged in the stalls and boxes that seat around 296 people, with a terrace for use during intermissions.
The building was designed by architect Martin Dülfer and opened in 1900 as Merano developed into a spa town for European nobility. Its distinctive painted facade has shaped the town's appearance since that era.
The theatre plays a central role in Merano's cultural life, hosting plays, concerts, and cabaret performances in German and Italian. These shows reflect the bilingual community and create a space where both cultural traditions meet.
The theatre is located in the town centre and easily accessible on foot, with multiple entrances and an outdoor terrace. It is worth arriving early to explore the hall and its architecture before the performance begins.
A fire in the late 1960s severely damaged the building, but a thorough restoration during the 1970s brought it back to life. The architectural details visible today were carefully reconstructed at that time.
