Villa Litta Bolognini Modigliani, 19th century neo-Gothic villa in Vedano al Lambro, Italy.
Villa Litta Bolognini Modigliani is a two-story manor in Vedano al Lambro built in a neo-Gothic style, with a rectangular main body flanked by two octagonal side sections. A gatehouse facing Piazza Bonfanti marks the entrance to the property.
The property was built between 1840 and 1848 by architect Luigi Clerichetti for Giulio Litta Visconti Arese, on land that had previously belonged to the Gallarati Scotti family. The construction was part of a broader wave of neo-Gothic building that shaped the villas of Lombardy at the time.
The villa served as an exterior filming location for Vittorio De Sica's film 'The Garden of the Finzi-Continis', which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1972. Visitors who know the film will recognize the facade the moment they see it.
The villa is private property and cannot be visited from the inside, but the facade is clearly visible from the street. Since it sits near Monza Park, it fits naturally into a walk through the surrounding area.
Duchess Eugenia Attendolo Bolognini Litta lived here until her death in 1914 and was known for her close ties to the Italian royal court. Her name survives in the villa's full title, keeping her presence attached to the building long after her time.
