Museo Civico Ala Ponzone, Art museum and heritage site in Palazzo Affaitati, Cremona, Italy.
The Museo Civico Ala Ponzone is an art museum housed in a historic palazzo in the center of Cremona, with paintings, sculptures, drawings, and decorative objects spanning from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century. The collection fills several rooms across different floors and also covers archaeology and applied arts.
The collection was founded in 1842 through the bequest of Count Ala Ponzone to the city of Cremona and was first housed in a different location. In 1928 it moved to its current palazzo, where it has been open to the public ever since.
The museum is named after Count Giuseppe Sigismondo Ala Ponzone, who left his collection to the city. Several paintings and objects on display reflect Cremona's long connection to music and craftsmanship, including depictions of local trades and instruments.
The museum is located in the center of Cremona and can be reached on foot from the main square and cathedral. Plan for at least a couple of hours to move through the main rooms at a comfortable pace.
One of the rooms contains a restored 15th-century cabinet with inlaid woodwork that originally came from the cathedral of Cremona, known as the Sala del Platina. The piece was dismantled and reassembled in this location, so visitors see it in a completely different setting from the one it was made for.
