History of Psychiatry Museum
History of Psychiatry Museum, Medical science museum in Reggio Emilia, Italy
The History of Psychiatry Museum exhibits medical instruments, scientific laboratory equipment, and treatment devices used throughout San Lazzaro Hospital's operational period.
Carlo Livi established the museum collection in 1875 while serving as director of San Lazzaro Psychiatric Hospital to document advances in psychiatric treatment methods.
The museum displays numerous terracotta sculptures and drawings created by hospital patients during therapeutic art sessions from the late 1800s through the 1970s.
Located in the restored Lombroso wing of the former psychiatric hospital, the museum opens every Saturday between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM for guided tours.
The ground floor features original restraint devices, while three preserved cells illustrate the transition from institutional psychiatry to modern mental health services.
